CAWCS Mission Statement

Our Vision

To be a world-leading research centre for Welsh and Celtic Studies that makes a distinctive contribution to the national life of Wales and fosters relations between Celtic cultures

Our Mission

CAWCS aims to:

  1. Develop understanding of Celtic cultures by maintaining programmes of innovative research and engaging a wide public with its discoveries
     
  2. Support the public, educators, policy makers and the media, as well as specialists, by making 
    available authoritative resources and expertise about Celtic Studies and the Welsh language
     
  3. Promote the vitality of the Welsh language by examining its development, defining its standards, and promoting its use as a medium for scholarship and intellectual discussion
     
  4. Develop future generations of expertise in Welsh and Celtic Studies by contributing to undergraduate courses, training postgraduates and providing post-doctoral research opportunities, independently and in partnership with institutions worldwide
     
  5.  Build stronger relationships between Celtic cultures internationally by forging partnerships, 
    attracting high-calibre students, disseminating research and stimulating interactions

Our Strategy

We achieve our aims by:

  • Running long-term collaborative research projects on the languages, literatures, culture and history of Wales and the other Celtic countries
     
  • Collaborating with other academic institutions and public bodies in our country and internationally
     
  • Publishing our work in print and online in the two languages of Wales and other languages Organising conferences and other public events in Wales and presenting our work throughout the world
     
  • Providing Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, The Dictionary of Welsh Biography, Wales 1900 (place-name database), AEMAP (Bronze Age language and archaeology database), Gutorglyn.net and other electronic resources freely online
     
  • Developing a strong, diverse and sustainable funding base for our activities
     
  • Recruiting, developing and retaining high calibre staff
     
  • Ensuring that we work effectively and maximise value for the public and private money invested in our work
