Gowns and Hoods

Bachelors and Masters wear a black stuff or silk gown of the patterns customary for these degrees.

Doctors wear, in undress, a black stuff or silk gown of the customary pattern. In full dress, a Doctor of Philosophy wears a crimson cloth gown, with full sleeves reversed at the edge in front, with silk facings and sleeve-linings of colours proper to the Faculty in which the degree has been obtained; other Doctors wear a scarlet cloth gown, with full sleeves reversed at the edge in front, with silk facings and sleeve-linings of colours proper to the respective Faculties.

Bachelors’ hoods are of the Oxford form, and are made of black stuff or silk, except in the Faculty of Music, in which they are made of dark blue silk. In all Faculties, except the Faculty of Medicine, Bachelors’ hoods are bordered with silk of the colours proper to the respective Faculties; in the Faculty of Medicine they are lined with silk of the colours proper to the Faculty and are bordered with white (Medicine and Surgery) or purple (Dentistry).

Masters’ hoods are of the Cambridge form, and are made of black silk, except in the Faculty of Music, in which they are made of dark blue silk. Masters’ hoods are lined with silk of the colours proper to the respective Faculties. In addition the hood of a Master of Philosophy is bordered with crimson and the hoods of a Master of Surgery and a Master of Dental Science are bordered with white and purple respectively. The hood of a Master of Research is lined with silk of the colours proper to the Faculty in which the degree was awarded.

Doctors’ hoods are of the Cambridge form. They are made of scarlet cloth, except in the case of a Doctor of Philosophy, whose hood is made of crimson cloth. The hoods of Doctors are lined with silk of the colours proper to the Faculty in which the degree has been obtained, the hood of a Doctor in Medicine being, in addition, bordered with white.

  • BMus, MMus, DMus Pearl colour (a shot silk of three hues)
  • LLB, LLM, LLD Red shot with purple
  • BD, MTh, DD Mazarin blue shot with red

    BTh Mazarin blue shot with red, edged with white
  • MB, BCh, MD, MCh Green shot with black, edged with white

    BMedSc Bronze colour (yellow shot with black), edged with green shot with black
    BDS, BSD, MScD, DDSc Shot silk of saxe blue, edged with purple

    BN, MN, DNursSci Green shot with white, edged with red
    MPH Green shot with black, edged with emerald green
  • BArch Shot silk of scarlet red
  • BScEcon, MScEcon, DScEcon Red shot with yellow

    EMBS, MBA Red shot with yellow, edged with pale blue

Bachelors, Masters and Doctors in undress wear the ordinary square cap. Doctors in full dress wear a similar cap of black velvet with a black silk tassel.

(The University is in the process of devising a distinct form of academic dress which holders of certain Diplomas will be entitled to wear.)

University Badge
The University Badge takes the form of the Shield only, from the Arms of the University, and is made of murrey silk or wire thread woven into a back-ground or field of argent. The eight mullets, or stars, and the three lamps are of ’old gold’ silk thread or wire. Subscribed are the words Goreu Awen Gwirionedd .
