10am, 8th November 2012, National Science Learning Centre, University of York.
The system of external examining is used by UK universities as one way to monitor and ensure academic standards are appropriate. In this time of a changing higher education landscape, students are becoming increasingly focused on the value of their qualification and therefore it is particularly important to assure quality.
The Higher Education Academy (HEA) and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) are jointly holding a conference on external examining, a repeat of the successful one held on 10 May 2012. The conference will disseminate the new QAA guidance for external examiners within the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, and also the HEA external examiners handbook. Participants will explore the new QAA and HEA guidance, and consider the impact on their practice.
Interactive workshops will cover: 1. Roles and responsibilities; 2. Induction & Mentoring; 3. External examiner reports – the student perspective; 4. External examiner reports – the institutional perspective.
Audience: Academics who are experienced, recently appointed and aspiring external examiners; other academics involved in the external examiner process; staff development personnel involved with the training of external examiners.
