Research Students Conference

The second Research Students’ Conference took place in May at the Parc Hotel in in Cardiff. The conference was an opportunity for Research Students to come together and share best practice. The agenda for this year’s conference had been tailored to respond to feedback on last year’s event and to suggestions from the University’s research student community.
Following a warm welcome from Professor Linden Peach, delegates were invited to share information on their research interests with each other.
Sessions and workshops on key skills and resources for research students were on offer. For instance, two publishers from Emerald delivered a lecture on getting research published, and provided delegates a month’s free subscription to their journals.
A representative from IBM provided tips for utilising the licenced data analysis software SPSS and colleagues from VITAE were on hand to discuss professional and career development opportunities for doctoral researchers and research staff within Higher Education.
Throughout the conference research posters produced by delegates were exhibited as part of the conference’s poster competition. The first prize, an external hard drive and £200 towards research activities of his choice, was won by Mr Paul Gray from Swansea Metropolitan University.
Feedback to this event has been very positive, and students have since emailed to say they feel encouraged and inspired to continue their research journey, which, traditionally, is said to be a lonely one. Hopefully this event has helped our students to consolidate their research interests and forge new communities to support these.
