New to teaching in the social sciences residential workshop

Posted on 19 February 2013
  • Date: 14 Mar 2013 - 15 Mar 2013
  • Start Time: 01:00 pm
  • Location/venue: Holiday Inn, Castle Street, Cardiff , CF10 1XD

These workshops are ideally suited for colleagues in their first two years of teaching in HE, those who are studying towards a PhD and have teaching commitments and those looking to apply for HEA Fellowship. This is your chance to meet colleagues from other institutions who are also new to teaching within these disciplines – to share your experiences and learn from one another.

The workshop is designed to support colleagues from across the social sciences. However, the sessions will be facilitated by the HEA discipline leads for Sociology and Education and so may be particularly suited to colleagues working within these, and related, subject areas.

While there will be plenty of opportunities to network and to discuss issues you raise, the events will be structured around a number of inputs and activities. These will be led by experienced lecturers.

Topics covered include:

• Experiences as a new teacher
• Qualities of a ‘good’ HE teacher
• Balancing academic duties – teaching, research, administration, leadership
• Social Sciences in HE today
• Effective use of technology
• Curriculum development
• Approaches to assessment and feedback
• UK Professional Standards Framework and Fellowship of the HEA

A more detailed programme will be posted to this webpage shortly, but the link to our blog (see related documents section of this page) outlines the activities that took place at new to teaching events held last year.

For colleagues from subscribing institutions* to the HEA there is no charge for attending the workshop (including lunches and dinner), but there is a £79.00 charge (payable to the HEA) for accommodation and breakfast at the conference venue.

For delegates from non-subscribing institutions there is a £150.00 charge for attending the event (including lunches and dinner) plus a £79.00 charge (both payable to the HEA) for accommodation and breakfast at the conference venue.
