‘Rural Wales in the Twenty - First Century’ by Paul Milbourne

The University of Wales Press invites press and interested members of the public to the launch of its latest title, Rural Wales in the Twenty-First Century edited by Professor Paul Milbourne.

From 5.30 – 7.30pm on 22 March, the launch will take place in Cardiff’s Parc Thistle Hotel in the Prince’s Suite.

The book explores the changing relations between people, place and environment in rural Wales in the twenty-first century.

Written by experts in their fields and drawing on a broad range of academic work, the book focuses on social, cultural, economic, welfare and environmental themes.

It uses the spaces, places and environments of rural Wales to provide a broader critique of rural change in Wales, the UK and other developed countries, and to consider the implications of this change for rural geographers and rural sociologists.

Professor Paul Cloke, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Exeter said:

“This book provides the most complete survey to date of the dynamic rural geographies of rural Wales, written by Wales’ leading observers of countryside change.

“In so doing, the book makes a highly significant contribution to the canon of rural geography literature, and deserves to be read by researchers and educators across the world.”

Professor Alessandro Bonanno, Distinguished Professor and Texas State University System Regents’ Professor of Sociology added:

“The team of contributors assembled by the editor, Paul Milbourne, is first rate and comprises researchers who achieved national and international reputation thought their work on rural areas and rural Wales in particular.

“This book will undoubtedly impact the current debate on the conditions and future of rural areas not only in Wales and the UK but also elsewhere in the developed world.

“Written in an accessible manner, this edited volume will appeal to a broad audience of students and scholars in geography, sociology and rural studies.”

Paul Milbourne is Professor of Human Geography in the School of City and Regional Planning at Cardiff University.
