Vice Chancellor Professor Marc Clement

Professor Marc Clement said today (22.3.2011 – 15.00hours):

The University of Wales welcomes the McCormick report and is delighted there appears to be a convergence of views about the future of higher education in Wales.

Having now had a chance to review the report fully, we are pleased to find ourselves aligned with Mr McCormick and his colleagues in recognising that the higher education context in Wales and the world has changed radically.

After reviewing our options for some time, the University of Wales Council decided on February 11 to embark on a major strategic transformation through a merger with the University of Wales: Trinity Saint David, Swansea Metropolitan University and University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

This merger will create a single unitary University, which could accommodate other Universities if they feel it is right for them.

Our objective, to use the words of the McCormick review, is to create a fully-integrated single institution with a single distinct mission that enhances student experience, strengthens academic activity and builds Wales’s global standing.

We therefore look forward to working with the Welsh Assembly Government, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and all our colleagues in higher education in Wales to deliver radical change that meets the needs of our nation in the 21st century.
