Watch your language! Printers’ errors and Dictionary slips

The University of Wales Dictionary of the Welsh Language now has over a hundred Friends and on Saturday, June 23 there will be an opportunity for both current and prospective Friends to hear about the work of the Dictionary over the past year – and more!

The Chairman of the Friends of the University of Wales Welsh Dictionary is Myrddin ap Dafydd and during this year's meeting he will draw on his experience as founder and owner of Gwasg Carreg Gwalch. He will discuss some print-related words as well as some hilarious examples of printers’ errors.

Among other speakers in the meeting at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth will be the historian Dr Elin Jones who will draw on her knowledge of the Gwentian dialect, and the well-known historian Professor Geraint Jenkins, former director of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (where the Dictionary is based) .

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear about a new crowdsourcing project to digitize the Dictionary’s collection of citation slips, GPC +. The Dictionary won one of the Welsh Government's ‘Cymraeg2050’ grants to set up the project, and everyone, if they wish, can have a go at transcribing some of the slips in a training session at the end of the meeting.

All the current Friends of the Dictionary will be welcome as well as everyone who is interested in our work. There will be an opportunity to join the Friends at the meeting.

Place? Y Drwm, National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth at 14:00 on June 23, 2018
