“Curious Travellers” - Dr Johnson and Thomas Pennant on Tour

5 October 2018 – 12 January 2019

An exploration of the journeys and the writings of two influential eighteenth authors, the Welsh naturalist Thomas Pennant  1726– 98) and the English writer and lexicographer Samuel Johnson (1709–84), examining their accounts of Scotland and Wales – and the responses of contemporary readers to their published Tours.

15 November (evening event at Dr Johnson’s House): Professors Murray Pittock and Nigel Leask of Glasgow University will give talks on ‘Johnson and Pennant in Scotland’.

16 November (Linnean Society, Burlington House): ‘Thomas Pennant, Travel and the Making of Enlightenment Knowledge’. Day Conference and launch of digital texts, with an accompanying exhibition of a selection of Pennant’s writings on natural history.

14 December (evening event at Dr Johnson’s House): poetry, music and thoughts on travel with Scottish writer Alec   Finlay and Welsh National Poet Ifor ap Glyn.
