Gregynog Hall
On Friday 24 May, a beautiful spring day, Welsh-speaking members of the Classics Section of the University of Wales Alumni Association came together in Gregynog for a one-day meeting.
The Section’s committee met in the morning and after lunch there were three papers: Dr Telfryn Pritchard recalled the Classics Department of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and its contribution in the late 1950s and early 1960s; Professor Ceri Davies discussed translations of Sophocles’ Antigone into Welsh; and Mr John Ellis Jones gave an illustrated talk about reconstructing ancient Greek houses.
Dr Iestyn Daniel also presented a Welsh translation by his father, J. E. Daniel, of a poem by Sappho.
The Section’s next meeting will be at the National Eisteddfod in Denbigh: Societies’ Pavilion, Monday 5 August, at 12 noon. Everyone welcome.
