Rhian James began as a full-time PhD student at the Centre in May 2012, supported by a University of Wales scholarship. Prior to this, she gained a BA from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and an MA at Cardiff University, both in history, before completing an MScEcon in archive administration at Aberystwyth University. She has since worked for periods as an assistant archivist in the archival data unit at the National Library of Wales (NLW) and at Powys County Archives Office. Drawing on this background, her current research will focus on digital humanities approaches to large corpora of unstructured textual archival data by using the digitised wills collection, held at NLW, to critically evaluate the potential of digital humanities tools and methodologies for research to scholarship across the disciplines. The PhD will be undertaken in collaboration with NLW under the supervision of Professor Lorna Hughes, the University of Wales Chair in Digital Collections, who is based at the Library.
