Welcome to the July 2010 Validation Unit eUpdate, our quarterly newsletter informing you of events, news and developments.
Administrative and Quality Conference
Places are still available on our Administrative and Quality Conference| to be held in Cardiff on 12 and 13 August. Session themes include Best Practice in Preparing Annual College and Course Reviews, Turnitin: Establishing Operational Policies, using the NARIC database and BAC accreditation. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Research Degrees Workshop
This workshop is being held in Cardiff on 11 August and will be an opportunity for colleagues at collaborative centres offering research degrees to discuss the new arrangements in place for UW research degrees, as established by the Research Degree Board.
QAA Reviews
Staff in the Validation Unit have contributed to the production of the UW Self Evaluation Document (SED) in preparation for the QAA Review in October 2010. The QAA have now selected the three centres they will visit as part of the review: British Hellenic College, Greenwich School of Management and Llandrillo College . Many thanks to those colleges for agreeing to take part.
Teaching Fellowships
The University has established a Teaching Fellowships scheme designed to promote and enhance the profile of learning and teaching in its alliance Institutions and collaborative centres by recognising and celebrating individuals who make an outstanding contribution to the student learning experience.
For the forthcoming academic year, the University intends to award five teaching fellowships to eligible staff from collaborative centres. Each Fellowship is worth £5000 and will enable Fellows to pursue a project related to learning and teaching. Student Survey
The 2010 are now available. This year’s results show that students continue to place a high value on| This year’s results show that students continue to place a high value on achieving a University of Wales award and are very satisfied both with the teaching on their course and the opportunities for personal development. The University will be acting on the results through the work of Moderators, Validation Officers, the soon to be established University of Wales Student Forum for London-based students and Moderator Champions.
Student Liaison Officers
The University now has three Student Liaison Officers keen to become a visible University of Wales presence throughout collaborative centres, both for the benefit of students and to enhance opportunities for centres to engage with students. Collaborative centres planning a student induction period might wish invite a Student Liaison Officer to meet with students and display information about the University of Wales. Online Library
As part of an Online Library annual review we would like to invite collaborative centres to submit the name of electronic resources (such as electronic databases and ejournals) you would recommend for inclusion in the library. Please liaise with your teaching staff involved in delivering UW schemes to gain their input and send your submissions to librarywales.ac.uk| by the end of August. Graduation
The annual graduation event was held in May this year in new city centre venue and continues to be an extremely popular occasion with students attending from all over the globe - see the pictures in theGraduation Yearbook.|
