Last week I held my first meeting with students from The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts. I began with a presentation of what the University of Wales is and what it stands for. A focus group followed the presentation, which dealt with answering how they heard about their institution; what made them choose their course; and, most importantly, what could UW be doing to make their experience unique and positive. For some students present it was the first day of their first year, making the initial questions useful ice breakers. It was lovely to meet students face to face and take away their ideas and opinions.  I hope the students at Prince’s found the presentation useful and informative.

I now look forward to many more student meetings. Following my trip to London, the Research Degree Board took place. Although we haven’t yet got student issues as an agenda standing item, in ‘Any Other Business’ I brought up the success of the previous day’s meeting as well as some considerations the University of Wales may want to take into account for the benefit of our research students. I am now in the process of organising meetings with key members of staff to find out answers to questions I was asked whilst at Prince’s, and will report back when I have more definitive answers.

On Wednesday I went to Carmarthen Fresher’s Fair, whilst Ben and Rhys attended the fair in Glyndwr Uni, in Wrexham. As I didn’t want to be on my own manning the stall I had assistance from Kaceigh, the Welfare and Student Rights Officer from Swansea Met, to distribute the scratch cards and prizes. We saw many freshers and I hope we brought bursts of fun to their Wednesday in the form of our prizes; one lucky student found three UW symbols on their scratch card and won the day’s prize of a Tesco £25 voucher.

If you’ve not heard whether a student Liaison Officer is visiting you, send us an email and invite us along - we are happy to meet you, our students, to hear your ideas and answer your questions.
