November 15th

15th November

This week I attended the research student’s conference for students in Greenwich School of Business and Management. It was held over two days, with a mixture of guest and student speakers.

It began with my presence at their Research Degree Board, where business included applicant transferral consideration from MPhil to PHD. This is a common process held at all of our Centres - if a student begins their research and sees great scope in the information they are uncovering, they can apply for an upgrade, providing a longer term for investigation and write up.

Straight from the meeting, I met with a cohort of research students, providing them with a presentation of what the University of Wales is. Explaining we don’t have a traditional campus, instead we validate degrees at centres where they are already established and host existing expertise. The emphasis on my project is not to detract from pride in the student’s institution, but enhance the experience - providing students with the best of both worlds from their own centre and the University of Wales.

It would be worthless providing events without the student’s input, and so I had a discussion with the students in Greenwich School of Business and Management about what else, alongside the library, UW could provide to supplement their learning. Information on Key skills was a big issue, as well as providing contacts for the students based in London to communicate with. This is already taking place with Rhys, who is organising the London Student Hub on the 24th November. Make sure you contribute to the event.

The second day of the conference focussed on the student’s work - how their research areas can be enhanced through presentation skills, both in the form of a Power Point and a poster.

It was a very informative conference, and I look forward to further ideas coming from UW students.
