Beach Balls and Student Noise

 Hi Guys,

Quick Question... What do you call a three legged donkey?

... A Wonkey!!

I’m sorry, I can’t help it. I’ve swallowed too many Christmas-cracker jokes.

I hope you’re all doing well; it’s been a while since I last updated you on my travels, since then I have visited a number of institutions, some for the first time such as Cavendish College and London School of Business and Finance. The second London Student Hub also took place at the University of London Union, which was eventful due to a fire alarm resulting in the building being evacuated, which also included those enjoying a leisurely swim in the pool.

The London Student Hub included the attendance of Jacqueline Young, Senior Lecturer in STEM (Health related subjects) for the University of Wales Faculty and Theo Taylor, Student Representative from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) as guest speakers.

Jacqueline provided a workshop covering the subject of Embracing Media through Presenting, Publishing, Products and Promotion, supporting students in taking the next step, developing their employability. It was a well-received workshop which provided the students with plenty to think about to get themselves recognised.

We also felt that it was necessary to provide students with an example of a successful and efficient Course Representative system, therefore Theo provided a session based on UWIC’s Representative system. Students are expected to be a part of a similar system at their own institutions without an understanding of such a system and its benefits.

Further sessions were provided by the SLO team and covered the subject of meeting skills, highlighting efficient and effective traits throughout three phases of a meeting ‘Preparation, Action and Reflection’. Examples were presented through a Course Representative system and general meetings outside academia.

Further to this, a summary of each London Student Hub has been completed and tabled at the Learning and Teaching Committee, where it will be noted and any recommendations will be considered.

I’ll be back soon to update you.

Take Care,

Rhys
