Validation Bursary

The University of Wales wishes to make available a number of Bursary awards to candidates following validated degree schemes at Collaborative Partner Institutions. The awards are intended to remit, in whole or in part, the tuition fees appropriate to the successful candidates’ studies.

1. A number of University of Wales Validation Bursaries [‘the Bursary’] shall be given annually by the University, on the recommendation of the Validation Bursaries Committee [‘the Committee’], provided that suitable candidates are forthcoming.

2. In the first instance, applications should be submitted by candidates to the Registrar of the Collaborative Partner Institution [‘the institution’] at which the study will occur. Interested parties are asked to note that:

  •  application forms for the Bursary may be obtained from the Director of Academic Affairs (Ref: EB), University Registry, Cathays Park, Cardiff, UK, CF10 3NS, or via the University’s website: www.wales.ac.uk/;

  •  candidates for the Bursary should have been accepted for admission to a degree, diploma or certificates scheme at the institution concerned and must satisfy in full the matriculation requirements of the University for that scheme;

  •  each application should be accompanied by two references, one of which should be from a person able to attest to the candidate’s academic abilities;

  •  it shall be a condition of any Bursary award given that the University may at any time publicise the fact of the award for its own purposes.

 3. Institutions may put forward to the University nominations of persons who, in the opinion of the competent authorities, are deserving of a University of Wales Validation Bursary [‘the Bursary’]. Institutions shall ensure that applications are complete, and where there is more than one, shall present them to the University in order of priority.

4. All such nominations shall be sent to the Director of Academic Affairs (Ref: EB), as above, and shall be accompanied by copies of the application form and references together with a brief statement from the institution on the merits of each case so put forward, which may include an assessment of the potential benefit of the award to the candidate.

5. The Director of Academic Affairs shall arrange for nominations to be put before the Committee, which shall conduct its business from time to time and shall comprise members of the Validation Board’s Executive Committee. The Committee shall be responsible for ensuring that Bursaries are distributed to candidates who meet such requirements as it may see fit to approve.

6. The Committee shall be serviced by an administrative officer of the University of Wales who shall act as its Secretary.

7. The decision of the Validation Bursary Committee shall be final and will not be subject to any right of appeal.

8. The Secretary shall inform candidates of the outcome of applications and shall arrange for reports of awards given to be made to the University’s Academic Board.

9. Where a Bursary award is given it shall be tenable for one year. In the case of candidates following schemes of study which are required to extend over longer periods of time, renewal for a second or third year will be possible, subject to the receipt by the University of a satisfactory report from the Institution of the conduct and progress of the holder at the end of each academic year.
