Guild of Graduates Study Awards

  1. The Guild of Graduates may make Study Awards on the basis of applications submitted for consideration.
  2. The Awards are open to all graduates of the University of Wales.
  3. The aim of the Awards is to support research projects or similar activity where sufficient alternative sources of support are not available. They are not primarily intended to supplement scholarships and grants for higher degree research, but applications for work related to research projects will not be ruled out, if it can be shown that the receipt of a Guild award can extend the scope of such projects.
  4. In making Awards, consideration will be given to what other sources of funding are available to applicants. Awards will not be made for purposes which could reasonably be seen by the Guild as the responsibility of the applicant’s employer.
  5. Applications should be submitted to the Clerk by the end of December or June, in typewritten or electronic form on a pro-forma obtainable from the University Registry or the Guild’s website. Each application should give details of the project for which support is sought, the proposed expenditure of the sum awarded, and any other available sources of funding. Any other information relevant to the scheme or to the applicant should be noted, together with the names and full addresses of two referees who could offer an impartial opinion to the Guild on the merits of the application – at least one of whom should have expertise in the relevant field of study.
  6. The recipient of a Study Award is expected to present a written report to the Guild on the completion of the funded project. Should the work be published in due course, the publication should include an acknowledgement of the financial support given by the University of Wales Guild of Graduates. The receipt of a Study Award will not make the recipient ineligible to apply thereafter for a Guild Publication Grant, for a publication related to the study undertaken, provided that the funded project has been satisfactorily completed. (Any such application will be in accordance with the regulations for the Guild of Graduates Publication Grants).
  7. If the recipient of a Study Award has failed to submit a written report within two years, he/she may be required to return the full amount awarded to the Guild.
  8. Anyone who is awarded a Study Award by the Guild shall not be eligible for a further Study Award within a period of two years thereafter.
  9. Awards are determined on merit by a committee appointed by the Guild, in the light of the funds available. The committee may seek its own external assessment of any application under consideration.
