Online Library FAQs

I'm a new student, how do I access the Online Library?

Answer:

Your institution must supply the University of Wales with your registration details including your email address. Once we receive these, we will be able to set up an account for you to use the Global Campus (which the Online Library is part of). If you have not received an email from us, your institution has not yet submitted the required information or we do not have your email address.

I'm an existing student, why doesn't my username and password for the Online Library work?

Answer:

Your username for the Global Campus (which the Online Library is part of) is your email address and is no longer your 13 digit University Of Wales Student Number. Your institution must re-register existing students each academic year and must include an email address for each student. Once we have added your email address to our system, you will receive an automatic email containing your username (your email address) and your new password.

I have received my matriculation letter, when can I use the Online Library?

Answer:
If you will be studying a postgraduate degree validated by the University Of Wales, you will receive a matriculation letter to confirm that your undergraduate degree has been accepted by us. When you have been matriculated, we need your registration details from your institution in order to set up an account for you to use the Global Campus (which the Online Library is part of).

Are we part of the SCONUL access scheme?

Answer:
The University Of Wales Online Library is not permitted to join the SCONUL access scheme as it is a reciprocal agreement between university libraries, and we do not have a physical library collection from which students may borrow books. If you wish to use a local university library, we recommend that you contact the library to ask whether they allow visitors to use their facilities and/or collections. Some libraries allow visitors to use their collections within the library but do not give any borrowing rights. Some libraries, however, are part of schemes that link local university, college and public libraries and allow visitors some limited borrowing rights. Your local university library should be able to advise.

Do I have an Athens account?

Answer:
Athens is an authentication system that some institutions use to grant their students access to electronic resources off-campus. We use a different authentication system called EZProxy. An Athens account does not refer to the e-resources themselves but only the authentication process. All e-resources that registered students studying University Of Wales validated courses have access to can be located via the Online Library.

Who can use the Online Library?

Answer:

Anyone can look around the Online Library but the University of Wales subscribes to a lot of electronic resources which, for licencing reasons, require a username and password. These subscription resources may only be accessed by:

  • Registered students on University of Wales validated courses
  • Teaching staff delivering University of Wales validated courses
  • Moderators of University of Wales validated courses

The following people are not permitted to use these resources:

  • Students studying at University of Wales accredited institutions
  • Staff at University of Wales accredited institutions who are not Moderators of validated courses
