The former estate manager at Erddig, the award-winning National Trust property near Wrexham, says he was attracted to his new post in Mid Wales by the “wow” factor.

Steve Griffiths, 45, has been appointed estate manager at Gregynog Hall at Tregynon, near Newtown and still can’t believe his luck in landing the job based at the historic and picturesque conference and event venue.

He will be responsible for maintaining the eye-catching black and white hall and its 750-acre estate, which includes 250 acres of woodland.

“I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I drove up the drive for my interview at Gregynog Hall,” he said. “I was so surprised that I turned around and drove up again. I think it’s the best kept secret in Wales.

“I walked around the estate yesterday for the first time and ended up saying ‘Wow’ around every corner. After 11 years at Erddig, where I managed a 1,200-acre estate, I was looking for a new challenge and have been lucky enough to get that in a beautiful place.

“I hope visitors to Gregynog Hall will get the wow factor that I got and fully appreciate the wonderful gardens, woodlands and parkland.”

His role at Gregynog Hall has a strong emphasis on garden development and woodland management as the property aims to become a leading visitor attraction.

Away from work, Mr Griffiths is also well known in equestrian circles, having claimed third place in the national carriage driving competition two years ago. His interest in horses stems from his father, Fred, who farms at Isycoed, near Wrexham.

Karen Armstrong, Gregynog Hall’s manager, described his arrival as a key appointment in the development of exciting plans for the property.

Mr Griffiths joins at an exciting time in the evolution of Gregynog Hall, which is planning an Egon Ronay style courtyard café.

Miss Armstrong is also seeking museum accreditation for the property and is keen to investigate the potential for a sustainable timber powered heating system and a hydro electricity supply from nearby Llyn Gwgia.

Other plans include raising environmental awareness on the estate, where a Forest School has already been established and developing a walled garden as an organic teaching centre for young people with learning difficulties
