Introduction to validation

‘Validation’ is the process by which the University, as the awarding institution, judges that a programme which is developed and delivered by another institution is of an appropriate quality and standard to lead to its award.

The judgement is made following a rigorous verification and approval process and, once approved, a programme is subject to the Taught and Validated Degrees Board’s quality assurance procedures.

The University of Wales Validation Service has been in operation since 1974. Today it provides degree and diploma programmes within 25 different disciplines in 30 countries, enabling UK and overseas institutions to offer the University of Wales degree at an equivalent standard to the degree offered in Wales. We are very proud of the relationships developed through this extremely successful and highly regarded international validation operation. The growth of academic partnerships with institutions in other countries and the links which result from these are valued greatly by the University.

Gaining (and retaining) validation for your degree courses from the University of Wales is not an easy option – it involves a great deal of dedicated time and effort for your institution, for the University’s staff and for its external assessors. We believe that this is time and effort well spent. Find out more >
