This paper examines the experiences of Welsh women who were employed in the munitions factories of south Wales during the Second World War. Few women had previously been employed in industrial work in the region and the creation of this new female industrial workforce was the source of considerable discussion and debate. The full-time employment of married women was an issue which caused especial concern, particularly in the mining valleys and it was perhaps not surprising that many people were unsympathetic towards a mobilization programme which threatened to transform local convention and custom. In addition to examining local reaction towards the wartime employment of female industrial workers, this paper focuses on the actual working experiences of the Welsh war workers both in the factories and in their homes.
