Llawdden was a mid-fifteenth century poet who sang in mid- and south-east Wales and along the Welsh Borders. Renowned for the high standard and precision of his verse, his work demonstrates a complete mastery of traditional strict-metre poetry. Most of the poems attributed to him are sung on the cywydd metre, and deal with themes such as praise, love and religion; he also composed poems of request and of thanks which contain some memorable descriptions of animals and other subjects. His entertaining and confident personality shines through his work.
