Snap to Guides in Documents

Snap to guides allows you to align objects with the drawings canvas and other objects. With this option enabled, guides appear whenever you move an object into alignment with the border of another object. These guides also appear when you move an object to the horizontal or vertical centre of the drawings canvas.

Borders are defined by the white resize handles that surround each object. These resize handles form a container around the object based on its outermost points, so guides for irregular shapes will only appear when aligned these points.

To enable snap to guides, right-click in the drawings canvas and select Snap to guides, or click Edit > Snap to guides.

The following options are also available with snap to guides:

  • Turn off the guides and smoothly drag your object: hold the Alt key (Option key if using Mac) while dragging an object.
  • Restrict to vertical or horizontal dragging: hold the Shift key while dragging.
  • Nudge an object in 1 pixel increments: hold the Shift key while moving an object with the arrow keys.
  • Preserve an object's aspect ratio while resizing: hold the Shift key while resizing an object.
  • Create a duplicate of an object while leaving the original in place: hold the Ctrl key while moving an object.
